Solar is abundant: approximately 800 terawatts (800 trillion watts) of solar energy shines on Earth every year. Considering annual worldwide energy demand is 15 TW, the sun meets the world’s energy needs 53 times every year! The solar industry’s growth to terawatt scale will require enormous amounts of materials necessary for PV production. Yet silicon is commonly found in sand, and is the second most abundant element in the Earth’s crust (25.7% by weight).
